After two consecutive victories – 5-2 in the league against Solothurn and 4-0 in the first round of the AXA Women’s Cup against Lucerne -, FC Lugano Femminile ran into a setback in Sion. At the triple final whistle, the Valais women imposed themselves with the score of 3-0 (2-0).
The approach to the challenge on Romanian soil is not ideal for Eleonora Castellani and her teammates. And the fact of conceding Matilde Figueiras’ red and white goal in the sixth minute certainly doesn’t do the Ticinese any good. In spite of that, they try to get back into the game, however, cashing in the second local point – sealed by Laura Müller – that increases the gap with seven clock turns to the halftime break.
Once back on the field from halftime, the initiative is in the feet of the visiting team, which has every intention to make the comeback and make the Swiss-French opponent doubt. At the moment when one can seriously think of reopening the contest, here comes the penalty kick – converted by Figueiras, thus the author of a double – that closes the confrontation definitively.
“What I regretted in this meeting was the reaction to the difficulties. We accepted them from the early stages and “dug our own grave.” Although we tried to do it partly and a little too late, we did not express ourselves on our levels and did not show our usual game. I am also to blame for that. I am sorry, because this game was not to be lost. Now the duel with the Wil awaits us, a real tough nut who changed coaches in the summer, yet kept the “hard core” of their group“, so coach Giorgio Fransioli at the conclusion of the challenge acquitted in Canton Valais.
Filed this duel without smiles, the HCL girls are expected to have ninety minutes at home, which will take place at the Cornaredo Stadium’s Field F ground on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, starting at 6:30 p.m., against the St. Gallen girls of Wil, with full points at the end of the third round of the season.
